Best Natural/herbal Sleep Aid?

What is the best OTC natural herb to take for insomnia? My problem is falling asleep. I have these racing thoughts and cannot relax enough to fall asleep. I have tried melatonin, st. john’s wort, and valerian root, but it was the cheap walmart versions and maybe I did not give them a chance. Any advice?
PS: I have read a lot of good things about 5 HTP and for the record, I take Zoloft each morning.

There have been clinical trial for the three you mention and none of them show good evidence for treating insomnia.

Warm milk or other foods that contain tryptophan are probably the best natural way of achieving drowsiness. I have found that listening to audiobooks on my ipod helps, as long as the narrator has a soporific voice.

  1. Melatonin nd perhaps some yoga and meditation to relax your "mental rolodex".

  2. Passionflower is good if it’s anxiety that’s keeping you up.
