Insomnia Tips, Herbs, Supplements, Ideas?

I have been waking up 2 – 3 times a night for a few months….

I’m guessing you’ve already checked and eliminated the obvious possible causes for waking up so often, like needing to use the loo a lot or being too warm or too cold. (If you haven’t, fix these things and your problem may disappear.) A couple of calcium supplement tablets before bed are usually a good sleep-through-the-night aid for me. Kava Kava root tablets also help a great deal.

  1. A melatonin supplement could help. Also over the counter sleep aids, which are all basically Benedryl. Try meditation and deep breathing before bed.

  2. First is easy, don’t drink anything with caffeine in it for at least 4-5 hours before bed. Some sort of exercise earlier in the day helps as well. Listed below are some sites about herds that may be helpful. I also have used calming visualization. Picture a place in your mind that is calming to you. It doesn’t matter what or where it is. This will help relax your mind as well. I imagine I’m floating out in the warm water. The role of the waves usually puts me right to sleep.

  4. You may want to try the following tinctures (liquid extracts) You can get them in a health food store or on-line.

Depending on what your issue is…

Passion Flower (passiflora incarnata) Helps promote sleep.
California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) helps keep you asleep.
Blue vervain (Verbena hastata) helps quiet the mental chatter
Take before bed and stick to the dose on the bottle

The above recommendations are good of melatonin supplements, laying off afternoon caffeine.

A note about Kava. It does help promote sleep. If you choose to use it I would use it in the short term. My experience and others is that it has an accumulative effect. After about a week or 2 of steady use people have trouble getting up in the morning, slightly groggy and foggy headed.
