I don’t know if my problem is actually insomnia, but I am unsure what else it could be. I have a serious problem falling asleep at night, usually I don’t fall asleep until at least 2am. There are days I was up at 8 to get ready for class, go all day, am ready for a nap around 6 (which I usually try to fight off because it seems to make me stay awake longer later), then I’m up again until 4, turn around and do it the next day.
I know my body is tired, it’s weird because I know I’m tired but sleep just won’t come.
I’ve tried several things: reading, over-the-counter sleep aids which don’t really help and make it harder for me to wake up in the morning, switching from caffeinated soda to uncaffeinated, listening to music, showers/baths wake me up instead of relaxing me, writing down all my worries and possible solutions before I go to sleep. I went to my student health center and they told me to try o.t.c. sleep meds and gave me a list of things to try, no luck w/that.
Thanks!
Oops, typo in the question, sorry about that I didn’t catch it in time.
Is your room to warm? Keep your room cool which not only helps you to relax under the covers when the bed warms but it also keeps germ levels down and you are less likely to get colds since they can’t breed as well in the cooler atmosphere.
Do you relax for an hour before trying to go to sleep or are you busy running around doing things until the last minute?
When you go to bed, read a book until you get sleepy, then turn the light off and relax as you think of the story you were reading.
Is your mind racing with problems or things that have happened during the day or with problems you need to solve? Try to do a strenuous exercise program for a half hour when you first get home from work to relieve you of some of the stress from the day.
It’s also possible you could have thyroid problems so go to your doctor and have some blood tests done and also talk with them about this problem.
My husband had to get on thyroid medication which was causing his insomnia. He also keeps Ambien CR at the house so when things get really bad, he can take them but they do give him a drugged feeling when he gets up so he doesn’t take them often.
I went through this problem years ago and still do occasionally but I actually found out chocolate helps me sleep and I sleep well when I eat a few Hershey Kisses (10 to 20 works well) a while before I go to bed ~ but not often. Caffeine doesn’t affect me like it does others so I can drink coffee or Diet Coke with caffeine and it won’t keep me awake like it does my cousin. Rather than keep me awake, it aggravates my fibromyalgia so I do limit it as much as possible.
You could also talk with your doctor about a reference to a sleep clinic where they can watch you and help diagnose you. I had a friend who had trouble sleeping and they found out her body was afraid to sleep (psychologically) because she didn’t get enough oxygen when she was asleep.
Good luck. Sure hope you can get it resolved soon.

Hot milk, seriously, heat up a cup of "cows" milk, "not soy" and drink it…without chocolate!
Chocolate is a stimulant, so don’t eat any before bed….
try it and see what happens!

Go to a doctor
You are probably just under going so much stress. Try relaxing, try reading a boring book until you just fall asleep.
THE LAST thing you should do is sleeping pills. You get hooked on them so much, you can’t get an ounce of sleep without them. So don’t even go there unless its your last resort.
