If I dont sleep well I get anxiety and suicidal thoughts. I am prescribed antidepressants. I have them here, but not taken any as on the rare weekend I get sleep i feel better. So I think this is my problem not depression itself
But without sleep I am so chronically deprived I start having mood swings, aggression, suicidality, anxiety and panic attacks.
This is really ruining my life. My doctor is not that helpful at all. I had to ask for the antidepressants yesterday, because I thought they’d help. but now I think it’s just because I was messed up from not sleeping. He refuses to let me have sleeping tablets "at my age" – 23. Then last night, it happened again. I awoke at 2am and was unable to fall asleep again. As I knew I had to be up at 6am for work and started stressing.
I do have underlying anxiety disorders but I wonder how much of this is related to my messed up sleep? I’m a shift worker. So… I just dont know what to do? I sometimes end up taking random herbs, tablets and alcohol in a desperate bid to try and knock myself out… ![]()
i have a therapist, i feel she is a good therapist and has done her job well. but I havent learned much more than I have in my self-help readings.
If this goes on for a long time, you may need a therapist to work on your anxiety.
Before trying a therapist, try the following:
- If you wake up at two, and cant fall back asleep for 30-60 minutes, get up for awhile. Lay on the couch, read, watch tv. Go back to bed if you feel like it.
- Quit the shift work. Find a day job.
- Do you have trouble falling asleep at the beginning?
- Identify the things in your life that are making you anxious.
- Lay down during the day and take 20 minute naps.
- Try something spiritual, like praying, meditation, yoga.
- Try www.mercola.com – Search for "sleep disorders" and "anxiety" look at his healthy diet recommendations. You could be alergic to something. You could be eating too much sugar.
- Take nature hikes to relax yourself
- Exercise. Take up running or skiing for example.
- Find a new doctor.
- Dont do anything rash. You can beat this.

haha its funny cuz im the same way and im 14. only i dont see anybody because my mom doesnt think i have anything wrong with me. but my old counselors said i probably had anxiety disorder. last week i was so panicky because i was stressing over the fact that one paper was out of order in my binder. And a lot of people with anxiety can have insomnia. or so ive heard but i found it true because i have bad sleeping problems and on school nights i fall asleep at about 3am. so im going through life this way since nobody realizes my problems so that got me into depression. but now i think im snapping out of it. but i must say its extremely difficult. Especially since ive been getting really dizzy and i could barely get down the stairs the other day. i felt so scared and i couldnt even walk in a straight line.
so what i say you should try doing is: GET A NEW FREAKING PSYCOLIGIST!!!! maybe they can give you the right meds. but dont drink when you cant sleep. i heard that its really bad for sleeping problems.
