5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown in comprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for the treatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used for treating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrual syndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John’s wort for the treatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, as it’s been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, while the herb may take a month or longer.
Author Michael Murray, N.D., a leading naturopath and coauthor of The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, delves very deeply to explain the hows and whys of depression at the neurotransmitter level, and the illustrations of presynaptic membranes may be a bit much for the lay reader. There are also several sections with intimidating titles along the lines of “Enhancing 5-HTP with Catecholamine Precursors.” But the book’s comprehensiveness makes up for its occasional denseness. Murray includes enlightening sections on nutrition for peak serotonin synthesis, other complementary herbal supplements, and many online and physical sources for obtaining 5-HTP. –Erica Jorgensen –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
From Library Journal
Murray (Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements, Prima, 1996) believes that the symptoms of depression, obesity, headaches, insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity, premenstrual syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia can be alleviated by taking the amino acid 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan). The body converts 5-HTP into serotonin, a neurotransmitter vital for brain function, and Murray argues that increased serotonin levels mitigate much of the discomfort associated with the conditions cited above. He devotes major chapters to depression, weight loss, insomnia, and headache, with each following the same format: exploration of the condition and orthodox treatment, review of studies using 5-HTP, and recommendations for therapeutic doses. Personal stories illustrate how patients have benefited from 5-HTP. It is apparent from warnings given throughout the book, however, that use of this natural supplement is not without danger, especially if taken with certain prescription medicines. @ttheboytwo I agree… Implying that it’s a choice is a terrible thing to say. I’d like to add that the apparent belief that ‘natural’ is always safer than ‘pharmaceutical’ is nonsense. Incredibly toxic chemicals occur naturally all over the world; digoxin from the foxglove plant, for example. Not to mention the masses of poisonous mushrooms and other fungi, bacterial toxins (like Clostridium botulinum toxin, aka Botox) etc. that can be found occurring naturally worldwide.

I tried this L-trytophen that they recommend and I got the same side effects that I got from big pharma’s anti deppressants.

i wish the world were a better place but there r many ruthless people and companies that got to the top because they r ruthless. not trying to be a downer, just trying to help some nice people understand.

@zzzonezz If that’s true, thne explain to me how I’m allowed to be given FREE Lexapro pills for every visit to my doctor — and that is for the entire month, and I visit my doctor each month, that means leaving only the expenses to the visits.

I don’t think all SSRI have these side effects. I’ve been on Lexapro for more than a year, and I feel nothing bad but just slow improvement for my control over my OCD. In fact, when my doctors suggested pills that have a quicker effect on my depression but have tons of side effects, and I stopped taking them due to these effects, the doctor agreed to just stick to the side effect-free Lexapro.

@BAMFITSamber What …
@BAMFITSamber What is your diet like? Are you eating tons of processed food? If so, you are ingesting all kinds of toxic chemicals like aspartame and MSG (which can legally be labeled under “natural flavors” on an ingredients list). They are excitotoxins – look up some YT vids on them. Eat whole, unprocessed real foods – like vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs, chicken, wild alaskan salmon. Don’t eat margarine – eat butter, it is real food.

@BAMFITSamber Sweetheart you need to talk to your parents about what you’re experiencing. A therapist can help you sort things out.

Natural medicine is not a cure either, it may be a better alternative. In order to understand depression you must look to etiology, read “The Ultramind Solution”, it presents a wealth of information reguarding the underlying cause of mental illness reguarding nutrition, hormones, inflammation, digestive function, stress, detoxification, and metabolism. It is a simple approach anyone can understand, up this if you like it.

Thanks, didn’t know that L-trypophan converts to 5-HTP which converts to serotonin.

@dancesonpoles I …
@dancesonpoles I don’t know how much help I can be but…Just remember just because it’s not “natural” doesn’t mean it is not safe for you! If a doctor wants to give you something for depression, etc., just take a small amount/less of the medicine and work yourself up if you feel the need. Some natural things have worked for me only to quit working shortly thereafter! I finally found a doctor that ran tests on me and found out I had no Lithium in my system. It has helped but not a cure-all!

@ttheboytwo So if you tried all these methods, have you found something that work?? Because I would really like to know so I can get some advice.

Although some things in this video are true, a lot of it just turns my stomach! I have tried this 5-HTP/Tryptophan along with many other “natural cures” from many other natural doctors and regular doctors alike! Much of it is B.S.!!! It is a joke to say that mental illness “is a choice”! I would love to seriously like to punch you! It is not a choice! Mental illness in most cases is likely a genetic cause and can also be because of a situation too but it is not a choice!!!
