Lately I have been waking up after 4-5 hours of sleep and can not go back to sleep, or if I do it takes quite a while. So it is not the falling asleep, but the waking up that is the problem.
I don’t want to try prescription drugs, and I have already stopped drinking coffee for the last several days. Any ideas?
I have similar problems due to odd shifts at work. I have heard that warm milk helps, but I have never tried it (hate milk). This is what works for me: room darkening shades, a white noise generator, and I spray my pillows and sheets with a lavender linen spray (it helps relax you). That seems to help me–I can even sleep during the middle of the day using that. Another thing you can try is this: about a half an hour before you go to bed, start turning the lights down or off in the rest of the house, turn the volume down on the tv, try relaxing with yoga or something similar. This helps your body realize that it is time to rest. Once you are in bed–shut off the lights and the tv. Hope that helps.

healthy diet, excercise, relaxation techniques, and go to sleep when youre tired – dont force it.

Melatonin (1-3 milligrams) Valerian root, or chamomile.
Melatonin is best for regulating your sleep cycle, as it is a natural part of your body’s sleep.

I don’t know what the best remedy is, and I don’t agree with the use of prescription drugs for this problem either. Here’s a website with lots of suggestions…

Try to use blindfold and ear plug. It helps me when I can’t go back to sleep.

*Make a fixed plan for your sleep: when to sleep and when to wake up.
*Do not eat much fatty or spicy food.
*Do not smoke cigarettes.
*Have some exercise during the day.

Valerian root is a natural compound that I have used for years for occasional insomnia …it works great and is not a "drug" but not everyone reacts the same to supplements!
