Does Anyone Have Any New Ideas For Dealing With Insomnia?

I’ve already tried tea, herbs, milk (warm and cold), soothing music, sound machines, fountains, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, reading, writing, watching tv, excercising, warm baths, essential oils, incense, candles, melatonin, over the counter sleep aids, and of course sex. I’ve been alternating between tylenol pm, tylenol cold and sinus, and nyquil for over a year now, and I really wanna be able to sleep without them.

I have occasional insomnia also, and didn’t want to take the Prescription route. I now take Valerian (an herbal supplement) andit works really well. There is anther supp. called KavaKava , which is effective as well . Both are available at health stores. Good luck and sweet dreams!

  4. Well, if you feel that you can consentrate very well and know for sure that you will not lose touch with reality and so forth, then you probably don’t need much sleep.

The most important things is to be able to do things safely like driving.
24 hours without sleep is the equivilant of 1 unit of alcohol or so.

  5. If depends on the cause of your insomnia.

If it is medical (I think it usually happens as a symptom/side effect) then you’ll have to find out the cause of it before you can move to get rid of it.
If it’s persisting, you should talk to your health practitioner about it.

If it’s emotionally induced (stress for example) then working through the issues stressing you is probably going to be the most effective way to solve the problem.

I have insomnia as a symptom (and a side effect, yay! Double whammy!) of an illness.
I haven’t found a cure, but I’ve found a few things that help:

Valerian tablets: They don’t help me get to sleep, but they help me stay to sleep once I actually manage to fall asleep.

Magnesium supplements: They where prescribed to help with muscle pain, but they also really, really help my insomnia.

Hotpacks: I have to be warm to sleep. If I’m even slightly cold I’ll lay awake all night. (My doctor once explained that human’s body temperature lowers as they fall to sleep, if it’s even slightly cold this process is hindered. If you have trouble falling asleep as it is, this could prevent sleep entirely.)

Books on tape: Preferably kids books. They keep my brain occupied enough that it’s not going to start worrying about not sleeping, but are simple enough that I’m not going to get to drawn into the plot, or worry if I fall asleep through them.

I think you mentioned everything else I’ve tried, lol.

A few people have suggested to me that getting up and doing something helps when you can’t sleep… but I find I get absorbed in what I’m doing, and I’ll wind up staying up till 5am…

I hope something someone suggests helps :-)

  6. Try to keep so much activity out of the bedroom
Exercise just a little before bed Ti Che or silent movements
the warm milk and tea and herbs do that closer to dinner or before dinner. The timers for sents and music as you sleep is great if they work as you sleep. Avoid pills and do not get on them. They work like a dream but leave nightmare after effects…

  7. I have heard of something called a sleep CD, it replicates the brains calming rhythms and supposed to help you sleep.

I have also heard of a therapy called brain music treatment, basically what they do is record your brain wave patterns when you are relaxed and convert them into sounds. So each CD is very individualised. http://brainmusictreatment.com/

Another treatment I heard of is magnetic therapy, you sleep on a mattress with magnets embedded into it and its supposed to help with insomnia.

ANd there is also electro magnetic pulse therapy, basically you lie in what looks like an ~MRI scanner thing and pulses of electromagnetic energy at a particular vibration is passed through your body.

I think what you also should consider is a sleep study to find out if there are any psysiological problems rather than psychological ones that is causing your insomnia for example your body may be releasing too much adrenalin, and so on.

    Good luck.
